The partial denture has its place to play in the health of the dental patient. We will be going through the different types of partial dentures. Each has its place ranging from replacing a few teeth to all of the premolars and molars.
Most of us usually stay away from partial dentures because we are not all that sure where the clasps and rest should go. If we do enter the partial field, we usually allow the laboratory clinician to plan the case and deliver our finished partial. We have no idea what he did, but we have our partial that seems to fit somehow.
There are a few rules you need to follow:
1.You cannot place a rest or clasp on weak teeth meaning lack of alveolar bone, mobility, badly decayed, or large fillings (amalgams). This requires looking for more solid teeth and crowning the large filled teeth before placing your occlusal rest. To place an occlusal and have the filling fall out is the wrong time to think about a crown.
