This course will bring the periodontal concept together. What are the objectives and how do we get there? Why are we doing scaling and curettage? What are we trying to accomplish? What is the ultimate goal for the patient?
It is generally believed periodontal disease is caused from the presence of the biofilm (plaque) left on the teeth and gingival (gum). These bacteria invade the tissues and break down the healthy tissue. Calculus deposits extrudes from the ducts and form on our teeth and become loaded with bacteria.
Did you know plaque and calculus can exist without breaking down the periodontal tissues? Your mouth is loaded with bacteria and yeast, but it does not mean you will have gingivitis. Though, if you allow the biofilm (plaque) to accumulate, it is like walking through the sewer lines below ground barefooted, hoping you do not have any sores on your feet. Yes, an open sore will allow bacteria to invade and infect the foot the same as the open sore....
